And so we continue the epic story that is Shannon's life.
"She's lazy! And bossy! And doesn't do ANYTHING! I feel like It's up to me to make this assignment A+ worthy!"
Shannon rolled her eyes thankful Amanda couldn't see her over the phone. "Are you sure we're talking about the same Aberdine? It doesn't really seem like her. She's never been one to be bossy." Shannon couldn't help but feel like she'd had this conversation before.
"Oh she's bossy alright! Maybe she thinks just because she landed someone popular for her partner she can just force her way. She's got another thing coming if she thinks I'm going to bow to her dumb ideas!" Amanda was getting a little too fired up.
"Have you even talked to her?"
"No. But I can tell what she's thinking!" Amanda scoffed. "She's so transparent for someone who shrouds themselves in black."
"Maybe you should call her." Shannon offered. "I think if you guys just talked it out you'd find you have a lot in common. Especially on this topic."
"What do you mean by that!?" Amanda asked. "Are you trying to suggest that I'm like her?"
"No. I just think communication is important for teamwork."
"You sound like an after school special." Amanda groaned. "Speaking of communication, hows it going with Jeremy. You call him yet?"
"Yeah, I called him a last week actually." Shannon said. "We had a really interesting conversation. Did you know he's really into protests and stuff like that?"
"Huh, really?"
"Yep!" Shannon continued cheerfully. "We had a whole conversation about the oppression of people and how we should do something about it. It really put our books into new perspective."
"It sounds like you guys are hitting it off. Maybe you should call him again. See if you can get him to meet you alone somewhere to study together!"
Amanda made it sound all so romantic. Shannon knew their conversations were more serious than that.
"Maybe. I should probably call him. I'm mostly done the book now thanks to him. I just can't put it down." Shannon eyed her copy of 'Nineteen Eighty Four' with anxiousness.
"You totally need to! Oh, there's another party not this weekend but next at Cassie's. I'm bringing you as a guest." Amanda beemed "You have to come. I think Jeremy is supposed to be there."
"Ok. Will Carl be there? He was a lot of fun to hang out with."
"Look at you! Playing the field!" Amanda teased. "Just try not to pit them against each other in unarmed combat. Unless they have their shirts off. Then totally do that. And tape it for me if I'm not there to see it."
"It's not like that!" Shannon protested. "I swear Carl is just a friend. I haven't even seen him since the last party!"
"Whatever champ. I gotta go. Try to save some boys for the rest of us." Amanda laughed as she hung up.
Shannon couldn't help but laugh. Amanda always had a way of making her smile. Shannon picked up the book and looked at it. Her eyes bounced back and forth from the book to the phone she held in her other hand. She took a deep breath and set down the book.
"Is Jeremy there?"
"One second." Came the familiar voice of the woman on the other end. After a minute Jeremy answered.
"Hey, Jeremy! It's Shannon."
"Hey, Shannon! What's up?" He seemed much less formal now.
"Not much, I just finished reading the second part of 'Ninteen Eighty Four' was wondering how your book was going?"
"It's going great. I'm almost done."
"Oh. Here I thought I was going to be able to brag about how far along I've come but you're still way ahead of me." Shannon laughed.
"Well, I think 'Nineteen Eighty Four' is a longer book that 'A Brave New World' if that helps."
"It does, a little." Shannon smiled hoping he was smiling too. "So I wanted to ask. Remember last time we talked you were talking about how you were into fighting oppression and all that?"
"Yeah. We have to fight for those who can't."
"Well, I was thinking about it. What do you think we could do to make the world a better place. I mean, as I was reading I started to think about what kind of society I think would be best. I was just wondering what kind of society you think would be best?"
"Well, anything where everyone has the same opportunities and is treated as equals. It's only when we all work together that we can make a difference."
"But how do you make people work together that don't want to." Shannon immediately thought of Amanda and Aberdine. They never seemed to join forces on anything.
"You'd have to explain to them why their shared goal is more important than their individual goals."
"But what if they still refuse to work together?"
"They wouldn't. I think everyone understands and is capable of working together for the greater good."
"I think you'd have to trick them into working together. Make them think they're working against each other but in actuality they're furthering mutual goals."
"That's a pretty devious thought there, Baker. Are you sure you're for world peace and not world domination."
Shannon laughed. "Well, so long as you promise not to stop me."
