Aberdine was announced as the schools new Student Council President the following week. Her running unopposed went noticed by very few staff and even fewer students. Her first course of action was the allow the event planning committee to start again.
Shannon made sure not to miss the first meeting. She'd get to see all her old Planning committee friends again; Beth, Damien, and Aberdine would be there too except this time as the Student Council President.
The only unfortunate thing about this was that Jasmine had followed her from class to room 1408.
"Shan-shan, you're joining the Event Planning Committee too?" She asked.
"Yeah, I was a part of them last year." Shannon said. "Don't you usually go to Basketball practice with Amanda?" she asked.
"Not anymore. I didn't make the team last year and I figured, why bother this year. It's not like less people tried out." Jasmine rolled her eyes as she spoke. "Hey!" She jumped up suddenly. "Why don't I join the Event Planning Committee with you!"
Shannon's eyes grew wide with terror. She went to object but couldn't.
"It'll be great, Shan-shan!" Jasmine beamed "My boyfriend says that colleges don't really look at all your extra curricular activities. It's just something adults say to make us take them."
"Then maybe you shouldn't join the Event Planning Committee" Shannon snapped. She looked away immediately embarrassed by her outburst.
"Nah! If I did that I'd never hang out with you!" Jasmine boasted.
Shannon sighed and opened the door to room 1408.
All the regulars were there. Ben was, of course, absent.
"Shannon!" Beth called "Come on in! I saved you a seat!"
Shannon smiled a walked in. Jasmine followed closely behind.
"Hey, Beth! How was your summer?" Shannon asked.
"Ugh! It was terrible!" Beth moaned. "My parents were so furious that I didn't have enough credits to graduate. They made me get a job and work all summer."
"How's Ben?" Shannon asked.
"He's good. He loves being in university." Beth went silent suddenly. "Can we, not talk about Ben? Or anyone who graduated?" she asked.
"No problem." Shannon said.
"My boyfriend's in college. He graduated two years ago." Jasmine said.
"That's great." Beth replied awkwardly.
"Shannon," Damien said as he walked up to her desk, "good to see you joining us again this year."
"I take it your in charge this time?" Shannon said. "No fighting over what should be done?"
"So long as we all understand that." Damien chuckled and turned to the rest of the room. "Listen up everyone! The NEW Student Council President is on her way down to meet with us and discuss plans for the year. She's not like our Student President last year. She's smart. So treat her with respect."
"She was also a member last year." Shannon added.
"Thanks, Shannon." Damien said through clenched teeth. "She was a member last year so hopefully she'll treat us all with the same respect."
"You were always terrible at speeches, Damien." Aberdine said as she walked into the doorway. "Hey everyone. I'm your elected Student Council President." A few of the younger students began to clap. Aberdine put up a hand to silence them. "This is more of a formal meeting since I already know most of you and how the Committee operates. Sad to say you're stuck with this joker as your leader." Aberdine jutted her thumb at Damien. Damien remained silent. She continued to address the group. "Since I was only just elected, and our previous Student Council President left a royal mess behind for me to clean up I don't have a budget proposal or any planned events. Yet." She paused. "I'll be meeting with Damien over the course of the next week to discuss whats needed, what's fair that you guys get, and what events will be planning this year."
Aberdine stood in silence now before them. All the other students sat waiting.
"Um, that's it." Aberdine added. "You can go now."
"I tell them when to go." Damien stepped forward and cleared his throat. "You can go."
The students all began to noisily leave the room. Beth turned to Shannon. "Hey, Shannon. Since today was a waste of time wanna hang out?"
"Shan-shan you can't!" Jasmine interrupted. "You promised you'd come over and study math. We have that quiz next week and you need all the help you can get! Remember?"
Shannon winced. "I did promise Jasmine we could study together." She said.
"It's cool. Next time." Beth smiled and left.
"Oh! Shan-shan I have to run!" Jasmine said looking at her watch. "I have to meet my boyfriend in an hour and I'm not at all ready for our date."
"Wait, what about studying for math?" Shannon asked slightly annoyed.
"We can do that after! I promise it won't be too late." Jasmine smiled and skipped out of the room.
Shannon sighed and headed to the door. She turned back to say bye to Aberdine. She stopped when she saw Aberdine sitting on a desk in the sunlight playing with her hair. Damien was leaning against the window talking to her in a hushed tone. Shannon smiled and shut the door behind her on her way out.
