Shannon's story probably won't end by the time January comes.
Don't worry. I'm not abandoning it. It'll still be written to completion.
There's still so much that has to happen!
The week that followed Amanda, Shannon, and Aberdine went around the school announcing Amanda's resignation as candidate and Aberdine's replacement. The following Friday was the follow up debate. Shannon and Amanda waited back stage with Aberdine.
"I can't believe we managed to get Aberdine as our new candidate." Amanda said. "The political thing suits you."
Aberdine shrugged. "I can't pretend I want this. I'm more of a "behind the scenes" kind of girl."
"You'll do fine. Besides," said Shannon, "no one ever comes out to these." She pulled back the curtain enough for the three to see out into the cafetorium. They all gasped.
It was packed.
"What? I thought nobody cared!" Shannon started aghast.
"I guess they started caring?" Amanda said.
"They're just here to see my chew someone else out." Aberdine said non-plussed. Amanda and Shannon spun around to face her. "When we were announcing Amanda's resignation and my replacing her as a candidate a few students told me they wanted to see me chew Cassie out some more."
Shannon laughed. Amanda just rolled her eyes.
The candidates were then all called to the stage. Aberdine took a deep breathe and stepped out, greeted by thunderous applause.
"I'll bet that's the first time that's happened to her." Amanda said.
"Wait, where's Cassie?" Shannon asked. "There's only four podiums this time. Not five."
"Shannon!" came a familiar voice from behind. Shannon turned to see Beth climbing up the back steps of the stage. "I've been looking for you all week!"
"Beth? What are you doing here?" Shannon asked looking around.
"I came to tell you the Event Planning Committee is back!"
"But I thought Cassie shut you guys down." Shannon said.
"Didn't you hear?" said Beth. Amanda and Shannon shook their heads in unison. "Cassie was removed from student council president! The vice principal has taken over and brought us back to plan this year's prom!"
"That's great!" Shannon exclaimed jumping for joy with Beth. Amanda just smiled and watched.
"I haven't told you the best part. WE HAVE A BUDGET!" Beth cried.
The staff member in charge of the student council debate came around the corner. "You girls need to take it outside. We're trying to have a debate and you're causing a ruckus." she said glaring at them.
"Sorry, we'll leave." said Shannon. Amanda and Shannon waved to Aberdine and the three left the cafetorium to go speak in the court yard.
"So, now I have to ask. Are you and Aberdine coming back?" Beth said to Shannon.
"I wouldn't miss it." said Shannon. "But I think Aberdine will be busy."
"I saw! Running for student council president." Beth said looking in through the courtyard windows. The students inside were cheering as Aberdine spoke. It was all too muffled to hear it outside.
"What about you? Will you be there?" Beth asked Amanda.
"What me? No. I have other important things to take care of." Amanda hastily answered.
"Will everyone else be back?" Shannon asked.
"Well, Ben won't be, but Damien has already agreed. He's taking over the club next year so he has to come back." Beth said. "But most of the crew is back."
"Wait, Beth," said Shannon, "aren't you graduating? You can't plan the prom AND go to it."
Beth blushed and looked away. "I'm actually not going to be able to graduate. I've failed a few courses last semester, actually."
Shannon nodded solemnly. She almost failed a couple classes as well.
"I can make up one or two in summer school, but then I don't know what I'd do for college or university. I'm not sure what I want to do yet, so I'll just come back for another year." Beth explained.
"Well, I'll be here next year if you want to hang out." Shannon said.
Beth smiled. "Thanks, Shannon."
The cafetorium roared with cheer and all the students began chanting Aberdine's name.
"We should probably get back in there. Being her campaign managers and all." Said Amanda.
"Agreed." Shannon said. Amanda headed in, Shannon stopped and turned to Beth. "See you Monday!" She said.
Beth smiled again. "See you Monday."
