Shannon

I hate writing transitional periods because you have explain that time is passing and that nothing interesting is happening.

The school year came to an end surprisingly quickly. The Event Planning Committee finished the preparations for the prom quickly.

"It's so much easier when we have a budget." Beth laughed.

Cassie wasn't seen for the rest of the year. Aberdine said it was because she was forced to leave the student council and had detentions right up until the second week of summer vacation.

Thanks to Eddie's help Shannon managed to pass her exams well enough. Fredrick was a bit disappointed she didn't do better, but Meredith was more disappointed this meant they weren't taking a trip this summer.

The week after exams Eddie had packed his things and was moving out. This time he wouldn't be coming back.

"Why do you have to leave?" Shannon asked. "Can't you just stay?"

Eddie hugged Shannon and picked up his last piece of luggage. "I wish I could, but my dad wants me to spend more time with the family. Plus Xavier misses me, so..." Eddie shrugged. "I'll still see you at school."

"When I get a car I'm visiting you every day." Shannon said.

"No you're not, gas is expensive." Fredrick warned.

Amanda and her family, like usual, left for their cottage. Amanda begged Shannon to come with her.

"Eddie's got a car now. I'll make him drive me up there one of these weekends. But for now I think I should stay here." Shannon said.

"I can't believe Eddie has a car." Amanda said sitting on her front step. She stared at her parents fumbling to pack their car for the long trip. "I don't know if that makes me happy or sad."

"Why would it make you sad?" Shannon asked.

"Well now we won't see him as much." Amanda sighed. "At least you're not moving away from me."

"Hey, you're stuck with me, sister." Shannon laughed.

Amanda hugged Shannon tightly. "Promise me you'll come visit? Or at least call!" She shouted as she ran to her car, her dad honking the horn.

Shannon waved. "I promise!" She yelled.

The summer passed mostly uneventfully. Shannon spent most of her days reading and helping Meredith around the house. She was a little upset that they weren't going on a trip again this year, but overall she was fine with it. After the year she had she just wanted to relax.

It wasn't until mid August that anything out of the ordinary happened.

Shannon was reading quietly in her room when the phone rang. A few minutes later Meredith called up to Shannon.

"Shannon! The phone's for you!"

"Thanks, Meredith!" Shannon called back. She picked up the phone in her room. "Hello?"

"Hey, Shannon." came the familiar voice of Jeremy.

"Hi." Shannon said awkwardly.

"It's Jeremy."

"Oh, yeah. I know." Shannon took a deep breathe. "What's up?"

"I was just wondering what you're up to. It feels like I haven't seen you all year!"

"I know, I've been busy." Shannon shut her bedroom door.

"Yeah, we didn't have any classes together, and I guess we didn't have lunch together either."

There was a small pause.

"I, uh. Just wanted to say hi, I guess." he said.

"I heard you and Cassie were dating for a while there." Shannon swallowed hard before asking. "Are you guys still dating?"

"No." came his quick reply. "That's over. That was," he paused a moment, "a mistake."

Shannon smiled. "Why do you say that?" She asked.

"It just wasn't what I thought it would be." Jeremy sounded like he had been cornered. Shannon wanted to make him squirm some more but she figured there would be time for that later.

"Well, at least it's over now, right?"

"Right."

There was another pause.

"Um, hey if you're not busy, we should hang out sometime."

"Yeah, I think I could free up some time for that." Shannon said smiling to herself.

"Cool." he said. "I'll call you."

"I know you will."
