There's a lot of build up in this story. Can you believe this has all been building up to this part? It's not complete, this isn't the end, but the beginning has been setting up to this!
Anyway. I hope you enjoy as the Baker Family Reunion.
Family members swirled around as if at some grand gala. The tiny little house was packed with all manner of Baker. From old to young they came from all over. And they all came to meet Shannon.
To say she felt special would be tragically understating the excitement of the evening. Shannon felt like a princess returned to her kingdom after having been gone for years! Every Baker stopped her and asked her things. A few even brought presents. Every Baker was happy to meet Shannon and welcome them into their vast family with open arms.
Every Baker, except cousin Eddie.
Eddie wasn't a Baker after all; he was a Cavanagh. His mom married a Baker after his dad ran off. Eddie was also the youngest member of the entire Baker family. But now that honour was shared with Shannon.
Eddie didn't like Shannon.
Shannon squirmed her way through the crowded hallways of the tiny one floor suburban home. Whenever she was stopped by a family member she'd politely curtsey and answer whatever questions they had before moving on. She never felt more alive. She wanted to meet everyone and get to know each and every family member.
She squirmed her way past two older cousins, Richard and Derek, and found herself in a darkened corner of the house. And in that darkened corner stood cousin Eddie.
"So, you're the new Baker, huh?" Eddie scoffed.
"Yes. I'm Shannon, and you are?"
"Eddie."
"It's nice to meet you, Eddie Baker!" Shannon giggled.
"I'm NOT a Baker. I'm a Cavanagh." Eddie corrected. Shannon looked startled. Eddie liked that. "Don't be so dumb. Not everyone here is a Baker. Families have other names too."
"I know that!" Shannon defended "I didn't know you weren't a Baker. Sorry."
"You're not a Baker either. You're something else. You'll never be a real Baker. You're just some dumb kid they brought home."
"I'm not dumb!" Shouted Shannon. The other Bakers in the room started to turn to the see what all the commotion was.
"Yeah you are. You thought everyone here's a Baker. Well guess what. I'm not a Baker. And neither are you!" Shannon had tears in her eyes. She never wanted to hurt someone before, but she wanted to hurt Eddie.
"That's enough, Eddie." Richard commanded.
"Shut up!" Eddie tried to defy Richard, but Derek stepped in and picked Eddie up by the back of the collar lifting him off the ground.
"It's past your bed time." Derek said as he dragged Eddie kicking and screaming from the room.
Richard knelt down and put his arm around Shannon, who was desperately trying to dry the tears from his eyes. "Don't worry about Eddie, he's just jealous that he's not the youngest anymore."
"Thank you. I'll be fine." Shannon managed to force the sadness from her voice.
"Look at you, a little trooper! Just like a true Baker!" Richard tousled her hair and walked off. Shannon smiled.
Shannon liked being a Baker. But she hated cousin Eddie.
