I really need to get up earlier. I've spent most of my day asleep or having fun instead of writing like I planned. The clear answer is, get up earlier!
Anyways, here's the next short story for Short Story Saturdays! I'm not sure what to make of it....
Flight 487 to Denver was delayed.
Morris Smith had been sitting in his window seat for the last 4 hours waiting for the plane to take off. Something about a fueling problem on the tarmac. He looked out the window at the increasing darkness around the plane and tried to surmise what was going on. The wing blocked his site of anything below.
Leaning back in his chair he fiddled with his mobile phone. He twirled it in his hands as he often did when he was anxious or frustrated. He had been looking forward to this flight for a month. Ever since his old school friend Lawrence Palmer called him up and invited him to his cottage for the week Morris had been anticipating this well needed vacation. Working two jobs to pay the rent wasn't Morris' idea of ideal. Perhaps he could convince Lawrence to get him a job at his firm.
The overhead light went off again and now all too familiar voice of the flight attendant chimed over the intercom.
"We're sorry for the delay. Flight 487 is currently experiencing some technical difficulties with their fuel system. Please remain seated. As a reminder turn off all your mobile devices before take off. Thank you for flying."
As if it knew, Morris' cell phone chimed to let him know he'd received at text message. The passenger sitting next to him shot Morris an evil glare. Morris smiled embarrassedly and quickly flicked on his phone.
There was a text from his sister.
"Don't go to Denver."
What could she mean? He frowned and quickly tapped his reply.
"I've been looking forward to this all month. Why shouldn't I go to Denver?"
She replied quickly.
"Trust me."
He frowned. Morris was always close with his sister, Jennifer but recently they had gotten into an argument about financial matters. Morris didn't approve of her now husband Max Ingram. She took his name despite Morris' insistence she keep theirs. He hadn't spoken to her since then. What could she possibly want to keep him from going to Denver. For that matter, how did she know?
Morris shifted his way out of his seat and into the aisle. Immediately two flight attendants approached him.
"Sir. You need to return to your seat. We'll be leaving any minute and you need to have your seatbelt on."
"Bullshit. Look I want to get off. I need to go someplace right now."
"Sir if you leave you won't be able to get back on the flight."
"That's ok. Let me off now, please. I need to see my sister. It's an emergency."
The flight attendant was silent for a moment then she nodded at the other to let him go.
"Thank you." He said as he rushed off the plane.
As Morris headed towards the exit gate he heard that Flight 487 was still delayed. He hailed a cab and jumped in.
"This had better be worth it."
