This one was inspired by a semi-true event. I was on my way home last night and saw a man in a window and thought it'd make a great idea for a short.
The man in the window
I was walking home after a party one night. It was the middle of winter or something, I don't remember. I just remember it was really cold! I was walking along the main road because it was the fastest way home. The road ran behind a bunch of houses so you can see into their back yard. It was pretty late so no one was awake. It was a really quiet night and I remember thinking it was odd cause there were no cars that night.
I was walking along and something caught my eye. I looked up to see a house with one light on. The sidewalk was pretty close to the backyard fence so I could make out what was going on really well. The room that was lit up was completely empty. The only thing in the room was a man standing at the window.
He was completely covered in shadow, a silhouette really. He stood completely still and stared straight out. I don't know how I could tell, but I just knew he was looking at me. I stopped and stared up at him. He stared back. I stood there for a while just looking at him. He stepped closer to the window and raised his hand and pointed at me. I could feel my heart racing. I wanted to just walk away but I couldn't. The man started walking towards the window.
A car drove by and startled me. I looked back at the car then back at the window and the light was out. There was no sign of the man in the window. I turned and quickly walked the rest of the way home. I try and take side streets more often now...
