Ok, I kind of like this one, but this is one of the reasons I didn't want to write the first scenario given to me all the time. Short Story Ideas the website tends to have a VERY finite amount of locations in its database and more often than not I see the same one come up over and over.
So, I hope you enjoy this one!
Jazz Soulo
"Good night! Thanks for stopping by!" Kim Parrot closed the door on the last customer and sighed. Running her fiancé's newly acquired internet cafe was not an easy task. They had only owned the place for a month and already bills were piling up.
Kim smiled as she remembered when her fiance Reginald Churchill bought the cafe from a rather desperate to sell Carlton Anderson. It was called The Scrappy Cafe then, but they had to change the name due to some bad press and unlawful behavior of the prior owners. They got it practically for nothing and immediately moved into the apartment above. Reginald was always good with investments.
Kim locked the door walked over to the counter, turned up the radio and began to clean. She always kept it on slow jazz at this time of night, it helped her relax after the more hectic days, and kept her awake on the slower ones.
As she swept the floor she thought about how much in her life had changed since she met Reginald. The was college at the time, studying political science. She met him at a keg party near campus. He was finishing his major in Business and Finance. They talked about opening a business and how it should be run and the best way to save money in this economy. They had a lot of similar ideas and so they hit it off. A few weeks later he asked her out.
The radio station switched songs and picked up tempo. Kim put swept the dust and dirt into a dust pan and emptied into the garbage. She put away the broom and started to close off all the computers that were left logged on. She stopped at one computer.
An elderly lady came in earlier and was using a computer to pay some bills online. She left her account logged in. Kim shook her head and logged the lady out and closed off the computer. A lot of people in the area couldn't afford internet so they came here. Part of the reason Reginald bought the place and kept it an internet cafe. Kim was going to miss this place after her summer break was over. She still had 2 years of college left.
The door opened and in walked Reginald with a brown bag. He locked the door behind him. The station went to commercial.
"Reggie!" Kim squeed at the sight of her fiance.
"I told you to call me Reginald. Only my nan calls me Reggie." Reginald corrected.
"I know, I just like to tease you." Kim shut down the last computer and hugged Reginald. "What took so long?"
"I had to take care of a few things. Hey listen," Reginald segued "when you go back to school I think I'm going to sell the Ensemble Dark Horse."
"What? why!?" Kim protested. They both loved their internet cafe. And the people in the area needed it!
"With you busy, and my second job at the bank no one will be around to man the store most days, I'd have to hire someone, and we just don't have the finances to be able to support that for more than a month. The Ensemble Dark Horse doesn't make that much to begin with and..."
"But what about all the people in the area! They need it!"
"I know but..."
"Why don't you ask the bank for a loan? You work there right? They have to say yes!"
"It's not that simple." Reginald sighed as he tried to explain how, even with a bank loan, the Ensemble Dark Horse would have to close down after a few months anyway. "At best it's just prolonging the inevitable."
Kim sat down at one of the computers and sulked.
"I know you love this place, and I do to, but we can't keep it running like this."
"What if I didn't go back to school."
"But you need to finish your degree."
"Forget my degree! I love this place! I don't want to lose it!" Kim stood up now, confidant in her decision. "I'm dropping out!"
"Don't throw away the past 3 years of college just for my store."
"OUR store!" Kim corrected. "And besides. I don't like poly sci anyway. It's boring! What am I going to do with a poly sci degree? Run for mayor? HA!" Reginald stifled a laugh. "I'd rather stay here and run the store!"
Kim walked over the high topped counter at reception where the radio sat. "I've been thinking about it lately anyway. I love the Ensemble Dark Horse. I love the people here, they need is. They need US. I don't want to close down."
Reginald sighed. "I don't want you to regret this decision is all."
"I don't." Kim said with finality.
Reginald smiled. "Well, ok then. The Ensemble Dark Horse stays in business, for now!" Kim squeed in delight. "I guess this isn't as sad as I thought it would be." Reginald reached into the brown bag and pulled out a bottle of wine. "I bought this because I thought we might as well have something nice before close down the cafe, but since we're staying open. I guess this is just to celebrate the next chapter in our life."
Kim threw her arms around Reginald and kissed him. "You're such a sap." They set down the bottle and embraced.
The radio came back from commercial with a slow romantic tune.
