I wonder how long this story will end up being? Will I be able to publish a short novel from all the work or just an over glorified short story?
Hmm....
It had been a week since high school started but Shannon still didn't have an opportunity to talk with Jeremy one-on-one. She watched from afar and absorbed as much knowledge about him from conversations overheard with his friends.
"You don't talk much do you?"
Shannon looked up confused. The pale girl who wore all black was talking to Shannon. Everyone else who normally sat at their table had moved to other tables by this point. Jeremy's table was overcrowded with boys. The fat greasy boy and tall thin boy also amassed a group of friends who moved from the other table. The scantly dressed girls table was still fairly empty, but now Shannon's table consisted of herself and the girl in black.
"Hey. You gonna respond or what? I know you're not a mute or nothing." The girl in black seemed annoyed.
"Oh, sorry. No I was just, thinking." Shannon took a long way glance at Jeremy.
"I'll be you were. What's your name?"
"Shannon. And you are?"
"Aberdine, but don't ever call me Abby."
"Uh, ok." Shannon wasn't sure what else to say. She thought back on some of the things Amanda told her to do when making new friends. "So, what kind of things do you like?"
"Not math." Aberdine smiled to herself. Shannon just kind of looked down at the desk. She didn't like math either, but she didn't think that was good enough reason to bond over.
"Um, do you like art?"
Aberdine just stared at Shannon confused for a minute. She shook her head before speaking. "Yes. I like art. Who doesn't?"
"Oh! That's something we have in common!" Shannon was a bit excited to see Amanda's technique worked. "I love art! I paint and draw all the time at home!"
"Let me guess. Sunshine and rainbows right?"
Shannon was confused again. Did Aberdine love art like she did? Or did she hate it? "Um, mostly flowers in vases. I mean, didn't every famous painter paint lots of flowers in vases?"
"Dali didn't."
"Whose Dali."
"He's a surrealist. He paints all sorts of messed up stuff like melting clocks and elephants with long legs. It's pretty crazy! It's like you're seeing someone else's bad trip!" Aberdine seemed actually excited.
"Do you have any of his works?"
"Like, do I own a book with a bunch of his paintings in it? Yeah. Why?"
"I'd love to see it!" Shannon smiled sincerely.
"Uh, sure. I'll bring it tomorrow." Aberdine seemed uncomfortable. Shannon had a feeling that Aberdine, like herself, had few friends to talk to. Probably because she always wore black.
The bell rang and Jeremy and his friends took off like a shot. Shannon instinctively grabbed her bag ready to follow them around the school before she had to get to her next class but stopped. She looked back at Aberdine.
"See you tomorrow!" She said cheerfully. Aberdine just kind of smiled and nodded.
