Short Story Saturday!

I almost subverted the schedule for today.

I have a rather annoying headache right now. I wish I could get rid of it easily without missing out on the lovely weather!

I bit the bullet and wrote a short story for you guys though! Nothing big.

The Love Letter

Percy Johnson ushered the last customer out of the corner store quickly. The shop had closed an hour ago but there was a surprise rush of customers. Percy wished he had just locked the door on them. He was supposed to be leaving now but he hadn't gotten around to doing at least a sweeping. Percy sighed deeply before grabbing the broom and began sweeping.

He liked working the late night shift because it gave him time to think. Every night after close he would start sweeping and when he reached the back entrance he had usually come across some epiphany regarding some situation or just about society as a whole.

But tonight was different. As he started sweeping he stopped at the front counter. There was a folded piece of lined paper. He looked around to see who had left it. "Hello?" He called out to see if someone was left in the shop. No answer. He checked the mirror, and when he didn't see anyone in the shop, he walked up and down the aisles to check if he had missed someone.

The shop was empty.

He walked back to the counter and unfolded the paper.

'Dear Percy,'

He stopped for a moment startled that it was addressed to him. He looked around the shop before continuing.

'I'm sorry this had to be in letter form. I really wanted to say this all to you in person. If you're reading this that means my nerves got to me once again and all I could manage was to leave this pathetic letter.'

Percy set the broom on the ground and continued to read.

'I have to confess to you. I admire you. Not just your work ethic but your beauty. You are the single most beautiful person I've ever met. Your eyes capture me and every time I gaze into them, even for a moment, I'm lost.'

Percy looked at himself in the mirror. He never looked at his eyes before. They were a nice shade of blue. He went back to the letter.

'I come in every day and watch you work. I wish I had more courage. Whenever I see you I want to just confess to all this but I can't bring myself to do so! Maybe, with your encouragement, I could come out of my shell?'

Percy thought hard about all the people he came in regularly. There was a lot of them, it would be impossible to figure out who wrote the letter just from that.

'I think of you constantly, and your positive and friendly nature make frequenting your tiny store worth while every time. I hope one day I'll be able to reveal myself to you and we'll be able to spend our lives together. Until that day comes I'm afraid I have to adore from a far.

'Sincerely, your secret admirer.'
