I never really thought about it, but I had to write what happened at the Halloween dance to explain what happens next.
Oh the folley's of unprepared writing!
The night of the Halloween dance had finally arrived. Erin and Scott showed up late, Damien was running all over bossing everyone around, Beth was quietly having a breakdown in the washroom but Ben seemed oddly calm about it all.
Shannon was stationed at the door to make sure students had their tickets and to sell tickets to students who didn't have any. So far the night had looked dismal. Nothing was going smoothly. Shannon had been staring out at an empty hallway for almost a half hour at this point. Only seventeen or eighteen students had shown up. Shannon was just hoping her friends would come and keep her company.
"Ben I'm sooo bored!" Shannon lamented, slumping over the ticket table.
"I know." Ben said sitting beside her. "This has been a pretty big bust. Even our student council president hasn't shown up."
"Is that such a bad thing?" Shannon asked.
"I guess not." Ben nodded thoughtfully. "If she doesn't see how badly this is going she can't close down our committee."
"I kinda meant because I don't like her." Shannon admitted feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Oh." Ben just stared quietly for moment. "I'm not fond of her either."
"Hey, do you think Beth will be OK?" Shannon asked.
"I hope so. I've never seen her this freaked out." Ben looked off at the girls washroom. "I wish she'd just come out of there so we could talk." Ben stared for a moment. He abruptly stood up and walked back into the cafetorium.
Shannon lay her head on the table again.
"Wow. What a party." came Aberdine's deadpan voice. Shannon looked up to see her dressed as she normally did. "I'm so glad I came now." She snarked.
"Aberdine!" Shannon jumped from her seat and hugged her. Aberdine struggled away.
"Hey hey, with the hugging."
"I'm just glad someone came. It's been so dead. Everyone didn't show up."
Aberdine took the seat next to Shannon. "Where's Eddie and Amanda? Didn't they buy tickets?"
"A lot of people bought tickets." Shannon said resting her head on her hands. "No one showed up though."
"Is that a bad thing? At least you guys made the money you needed."
"But if word goes around school the Halloween dance was lame our committee will be shut down!" Shannon turned to Aberdine. "I just wanted to help people. Why did this have to happen."
"Uh, before you start feeling sorry for yourself, you might want to check out the front door." Aberdine said pointing.
The front doors to the burst open and the entire junior girls basketball team came in all in costume, each sporting a large entourage. At the front of the pack was Amanda leading Eddie by the arm up the hall.
"Hey, Shannon." Amanda said cheerfully. "I managed to convince a bunch of my friends to show up for the dance. Not all of them have tickets though."
"That's ok. They can buy them here." Shannon smiled. "Thank you guys so much for coming."
"Just one small problem." Amanda's grin broadened and her eyes darted around.
Eddie rolled his eyes and sighed. "She lost our tickets."
