Ah Shannon... If only you all knew what was coming next....
I love writing this story.
The cafetorium was almost entirely empty. The decorations were lackluster. The refreshment table was half-stocked. Barely any students had shown up for the Valentines dance.
Shannon sat at the ticket booth with Aberdine, heads slunk to the table waiting out the boredom.
"I can't believe nobody showed up." Shannon groaned. "This is going to be the most boring night ever."
"I still can't believe you actually showed up." Aberdine laughed.
"You said I had to." Shannon pouted.
"I know, but you didn't really." Aberdine threw an arm around Shannon and gave her a hug. "I'm still glad you came. Now we can be so bored we want to blow our brains out together."
They both laughed for a moment then sat silently watching the front door of the school.
"I can't believe this is the last thing the committee will ever do." Shannon sighed. "I feel so helpless. I want to help them but I don't know how."
"It's fine, Shannon." Aberdine said. "Everyone in the committee except us has been doing this for years. They're probably fine with it." Aberdine paused to take a drink from the refreshment table. "Besides, next year when we have a new student council president we could try and start it up again."
Shannon brightened up at this thought. "Yeah! Next year when we drop Cassie from power we'll be able to start the group again!" Shannon turned to Aberdine. "So who can we get to run? It's gotta be someone whose more popular than Cassie so everyone will want them in."
"Shannon, can we not discuss school politics right now?" Aberdine asked. "I don't want to sit here all night talking about whose more popular than who."
"Fine, but we need to figure this out." Shannon said.
The front doors to the school swung open and in walked Cassie and her usual entourage. Cassie marched to the ticket booth.
"I thought you quit." Cassie said pointedly at Shannon.
"I did. I'm helping out because you wouldn't." Shannon shot back.
"Whatever. I have better things to do with my time than worry about some club no one liked." Cassie's entourage all laughed. "We're not paying for ticekts. Student Council President gets to go to all events for free." Cassie said as she, and her entourage, walked past them.
"That's not true is it?" Shannon asked.
Aberdine shook her head and the two resumed their lax watch of the front door. Only a few minutes had passed before Cassie and her group came storming out of the cafetorium with Beth and Ben following close behind.
"Where is everyone!? You call this a Valentines dance!?" Cassie yelled.
"We didn't have enough time to properly advertise." Beth explained.
"It's barely decorated!" Cassie continued to yell.
"We're also operating at less than half staff." Ben said. "Most of them left after you shut down the planning committee."
"And I'm glad I did! You can't do anything right!" Cassie turned and stormed towards the door. "Come on! We'll just go to my place." And with that Cassie and her cronies had left.
"Well that was a bust." Shannon said loudly. "Should we just pack it up? No ones coming." She turned to Ben and Beth who were grinning from ear to ear. "You know something I don't know."
"We wanted her gone." Beth said. "Now we can do what we really wanted to."
"What?" Shannon asked.
"Since our planning committee is disbanding after this dance, we decided to make it a going away dance instead." Ben said. "Why do you think the only people who showed up are members of the planning committee?"
"And why do you think it wasn't advertised." Aberdine added.
"You were in on this?" Shannon asked. "And you made me come to watch the door with you!" She playfully shoved Aberdine.
"How else was I supposed to make sure you came?" Aberdine smiled.
"Come on! Everyone else is already in the cafetorium. Since the DJ is paid for, lets go enjoy our last dance together." Beth said cheerfully as her and Ben headed in.
"Hold up a sec." Aberdine said to Shannon just outside the cafetorium. "I have some good news I want you to hear before we go in."
"What is it?" Shannon asked.
"If today's a Valentines dance, why would Cassie show up without a date?" Aberdine said. Shannon's eyes grew wider. "Wouldn't that be something she'd bring Jeremy to?"
"Do you think?..."
Aberdine put a finger on Shannon's lips. "Shush. Now is for dancing."
