Lets write!

I felt like writing a story today.

After I wrote the first paragraph I wanted to stop. It was so perfectly crafted! I could call it, a micro story!

But I kept going!

The Canter Commons Hotel had been in business for over 60 years. The antique lobby furniture was considered the most modern when it opened. The wooden steps and guard rails were smoothly worn from years of use. The grand foyer was a testament to the now ancient look of the past. It was beautiful. And it was closing down.

The staff of the Canter Commons Hotel, or at least, what was left of them, all gathered in the banquet hall for one final meeting. They all mulled around and murmurs of concern permeated through the crowd. The hotel's director stood at the podium. He lowered his head, sighed deeply and began.

"It's my unfortunately task of gathering you all here today for the bad news. It's true, as you many of you have known for some time, that our hotel is doing poorly. It is with even deeper regret that I must inform you that The Canter Commons Hotel will be closing by the end of the month."

The crowd started to stir in angered response.

"I know. We all love this hotel. But unfortunately business has slowed to a drip. Our small community doesn't have the tourism base it used to. People care less about the natural beauty that surrounds the area and more about the comforts of the big city. I know you'll all miss the hotel."

He lowered his head and sighed deeply before continuing.

"For those of you wondering what will happen to the building, it will be renovated and turned into a club house for the golf and country club opening next summer. Much of the building, and the surround in land, will be demolished for the land needed for the golf courses they've already started to work on. They've already bought the land and will begin to develop it first thing next month. The cooking staff will have the option of applying for work for the new club house."

The crowd sat quietly. The director swallowed hard unsure of how to end his speech.

"I know these are rough economic times. Finding work now is very hard, but I hope you will all find someplace new that will bring you as much joy as this hotel has brought me. As for me I'll be retiring."

A tear came to his eye.

"I wish you all the best. That is all."

The director turned and walked off the stage. He didn't stay for the final staff party they were having. He couldn't look them in the eye. Especially after he sold the land the Hotel was on to the land developers. With the price he got, he could afford to retire early.

He walked into his office and emptied his things into a cardboard box. He looked at the postcard pinned to his cork board. A sunny place in the bahamas. He unpinned it and smiled. He was already on his way to a better life.

  1. Nice! You get a lot more from the story than what is written, I like it.
