Shannon finished segment

As promised I finished Thursday's part. It was always intended to go here but on Thursday I was just in a funk and couldn't write for long. It's kind of the same today.

Mr. Wilkinson had finished dividing the class and began handing out a copy of each book, and the assignment sheet to every group. "I'll leave it up to you to decide who will read which book. The rest of the assignment is on the paper. I suggest you ask any questions you have about it now because after today you will only have your free time to work on this assignment."

At last Shannon was going to be alone with Jeremy. They stood together nearby her desk waiting for instructions. Shannon needed to break the silence. Here goes everything!

"Hi." She said smiling a bit more giddy than she wanted.

"Hey." Jeremy replied cooly.

"So, I guess we're working together, huh?" Shannon wished she could've said something different. It sounded so stupid coming out of her mouth.

"Yeah, I wonder which book I'll have to read."

Jeremy seemed more focused on the assignment and less on their casual conversation. 'That's a good thing, I guess.' Shannon thought to herself. 'At least he's hard working.'

Shannon skimmed the assignment sheet before turning to Jeremy. "So, which book do you want to read?"

"I'll take A Brave New World. It sounds adventurous." Jeremy picked up the paperback and began reading.

"You like adventure?"

"Yeah. I like the idea of setting out on a journey, ya know?"

"Do you read a lot?" Shannon smiled and waited for his reply. Jeremy was completely absorbed in the book at this point. She could feel her window of opportunity shrinking rapidly. She had to get his attention and quickly. "Hey, since today's the only day we get to work on this in class, maybe we should exchange numbers so we can keep in touch?" Shannon suggested.

"Ok." Jeremy nodded.

"Great. Here." Shannon pulled out a pen and a piece of paper writing down her number and handed it to him. He folded the paper and put it in his pocket. She handed him the pen and a piece of paper. He only took the pen.

"Hold out you hand." He said.

Shannon held her hand out reluctantly. He took her by the wrist and wrote his number on the inside of her palm. "There." He smiled and went back to his book.

Shannon stared at her palm. The first boy's number she ever got. Written on her hand. If it wasn't so silly she'd vow to never wash her hand again. She just smiled and picked up her book and began reading.
