I have a fever.
And the only thing that can cure it.
Is more Shannon!
Oh god I love where this is going! Just you wait!
Shannon stood staring at the door to room 1408. It was in a largely unused part of the school that smelled vaguely like moth balls and was slightly colder. The school bell had rang and all the students had long left except for a few stragglers who hung out in the halls discussing plans for the upcoming weekend. She sighed deeply and opened the door.
Inside students were all sitting around a circle of desks laughing and talking. A few took notice of her standing there and watched as she walked in and took a seat at a yet unoccupied desk between one asleep student and another asleep student.
"Hey, new girl!" One of the older students called out to her across the circle. Everyone quieted down a few decibels and watched. "What's your name?"
"I'm Shannon. And you are?"
"Damien, not that it matters." Said the boy leaning back in his chair and looking out the window.
"Why doesn't it matter?" Shannon asked.
"Because" Another girl joined in. "None of the activities will be approved until the new Student Council President is elected for the year."
"And since none of us know whose going to be Student Council President..." Another boy chimed in.
"Not all of us might stay part of the planning committee." Damien finished. "So, though it's nice to meet you, Sharon..."
"It's Shannon, actually."
"We might all be gone in a week." Damien finished his sentence.
"Wait, the student council president is elected next week?" Shannon asked a bit surprised she didn't know this already.
"The council president is elected at the end of the first month of school." Said the same girl from before. "I'm Beth by the way." She reached over and shook Shannon's hand.
"Isn't this kind of a big thing? Shouldn't we, the student body, know about it?" Shannon asked.
"The schools always elected the council prez at the beginning of each school year. It's supposed to be a big event but all the students running keeping it hush hush to avoid heavy competition." Said another boy with thick glasses. He paused to push his glasses up further on his nose. "Politicians like to avoid scandals, and those pesky pre-election promises."
"Thanks, Ben." Damien sneered.
"I won't let you antagonize me this year, Damien!" Ben started to yell. Soon Damien and Ben were standing yelling at each other and the rest of the students and started to all talk loudly amongst each other.
Shannon felt like she had made a mistake and discreetly gathered her stuff and left.
As she was walking down the cold hallway Beth came running after her.
"Hey, Shannon! Wait!" She called as she ran. "Are you gonna join the planning committee? We're always looking for new volunteers."
Shannon thought about it for a moment. "I want to, but it just seems like, whys the point if everyones just gonna leave when the new council president is elected?"
"That's just Damien trying to scare you. Truth is we all mostly stick it out no matter who it is." Beth started to laugh but stopped when she saw the serious look on Shannon's face. "Look. Please reconsider. It'd love for you to join."
"How long have you been on the committee?" Shannon asked.
"Me, and Ben and David have been on the committee since our first year. Damien and most of the others joined the year after. Only Shirley joined last year and no one has joined this year. With all the seniors having left we're pretty hard up for members. Please reconsider. Don't let Damien scare you away." Beth put her hand on Shannon's shoulder. "Will we see you next week?"
Shannon smiled. "I'll see you guys next week, Beth."
