I'm actually a huge fan of Frankenstein. It's a great read if you get a chance, check it out! Be warned though, I think you need to be ready for it to read it. When I first tried reading it, I was bored out of my head and didn't want to read it at all!

Today is kind of a weak setup to some of the more important parts yet to come in Shannon's story.

Whenever I write something I'm not entirely happy with I remember 2 things.

1) Nothing is edited on here. It's all as it came to me. If I took the time to edit and fix the problems and plot holes and story devices so they're seamlessly integrated into the stories, everything would be 100x better.

2) The point of the blog is to JUST WRITE. It's mostly an exercise in accomplishing what I set out to do.

With Shannon in particular I want to prove to myself that I can write something novel length. After I finish writing it I do want to go back, edit, and fix up anything that didn't sit well with me.

Sorry guys! There's no writing blog today because the file I use to work on Shannon's story has gone missing.

I'm not sure what happened to it but it appears to have been deleted from my desk top. I can only guess I was deleting a lot of files I didn't need and she got caught in the cross fire and went to the trash with them.

THANKFULLY I have a blog. And that blog has a backup of everything on it! In the form of blog entries...

So in lieu of writing the next part I'll be spending today surfing my blog and pulling up each entry so I can re-create the lost work. If I manage to finish and have enough time to write a new section I'll either post it today or as an extra post tomorrow.

I had an idea for a comic. It's about a place, not the people in it. It's a cafe where people go and talk and in general have a good time. It'd be more philosophical in nature but maintain some comedy. The people would rotate through. Sometimes you'll never see a character again. Sometimes you'll see them a lot.

Anyway. Here's the first test of it.

Shannon Some More

A couple of people have been asking how long Shannon's Story is. Short answer is "I don't know."

The long answer:
I love writing it and have so many ideas I want to work with in this. I'll be getting to them eventually but I only every write a few pages at a time so be patient.

My intention with Shannon was to see if I could write a novel-length story. Not necessarily a novel, but perhaps with some heavy editing and tweaking I could turn what I have into one.

Since I started the write blog I learned how easy it is for me to write. I spent a chunk of time working on short stories and learned how to handle that format. I felt I couldn't commit to characters or settings so I set out to write something longer, hence the murder mystery in May. But I never wrote something novel length. We're talking somewhere around 200-300 pages. Last I checked, unedited and without page breaks Shannon's story was close to 85 pages. That was a few weeks back too. Just so you get an idea of how long this going to be.

Maybe when I finish it I'll make a compilation post with the edited story and chapters and everything. We'll see.

In the mean time enjoy the next segment!

Octopus Pie

So I feel like I'm starting to slow down here. I feel I need some time off. Maybe I just need time off from work. I just want to wander around the city for a week. I don't know why.

I think every year around this time I get enamored with big city life. Probably because I live in suburbia, and have all my life.

Return of the Italian Sonnet

The Italian Sonnet I attempted before was kind of lack luster. I've written a new one, a better one. It's also more proper in the sense of structure and rhyme scheme. It's still not perfect, (counting syllables and stresses on parts of words is enough to give someone a migraine!) but I'm still trying!

Spenserian Sonnet

Today's is Spenserian Sonnet which will be the last specific kind of Sonnet you'll be seeing since the only other variety (to date) is the Indefinable Sonnet, which follows no specific structure.

As with all my sonnets, the structure is there, but the rhyme scheme is not. I'm not gonna pretend I at all know what I'm doing, but I'll be doing more research on it in the future.

I like writing supplemental chapters. It informs the reader/audience of what's going on without revealing it to the protagonist. Especially in a story that's very focused on one charter, like Shannon.

Short Story Saturday

Today is Short Story Saturday! I actually wrote this while visiting with my brother on the deck.
I had to use my mom's laptop cause my computer was shut off. We were installing new light fixtures and it was safer to turn the power off everywhere in the house, not just the kitchen.

I've been having really weird dreams. A lot of them involve being back in school.

Last night I dreamt that I was going to school that had a prom-like scenario mid winter. Tradition was for all the men (after the dance) to go outside, strip down, and do a lap around campus naked. I was about to join them, but it was called off because it was too rainy and not snowy enough. Apparently snow is necessary for streaking.

Anyway, as a safer alternative the school filled their gymnasium with a snow-like substance that was softer than clouds. I remember diving into it and thinking "This is what fun should be like. Soft. Safe."

I really wish the places I visited in my dreams were real. They're so much more fascinating than the real world.

Video games have been a rather big part of my life. I've love playing them and find them to provide days, sometimes years, of entertainment. I've always been the type to compile all my games instead of selling them/trading them in, so whenever I want to go back and play a game I liked I just do so.

It helps when there's a games drought like now. By games drought I mean, no GOOD games coming out that I'm interested in. Now I can go back and play all the games I never finished! Like Harvest Moon....

My parents are a wealth of knowledge. Most of it useless.

I remember my first exams. They were pretty nerve racking but I was pretty sure I was well prepared. My first grade 9 math test was actually way more stressful! But I blame my math teacher for that. The week before he would go on and on about how students always underestimated the seriousness of their first high school math test and how it was so much harder than they thought and how they'd often fail if they didn't study hard enough!

Way to make me stress for nothing!

I was reading about the protests going on all over and how sad a state the world is in. I feel like Jimmy from Art School Confidential, just hoping for the for the slim chance that you might one day, possibly, see some glorious plague or pestilence bring horrible suffering to your hateful species.

Free Verseing It!

I wrote a free verse poem at work on Wednesday. But that's not what you're going to read!

I wrote this one just now... And by just now I mean after I ate breakfast and made myself a cup of tea.

I find a lot of people tend to try and force me into situations I don't want to be in (for now).
I almost never title my work, but this time I did.

Ok, I'm tired of ranting over on the Art Blog. Suffice it to say, I think Playstation All-Stars: Battle Royale is a travesty. It's games like this that make me weep for the ingenuity of the future.

I don't feel like working to hard today. I have to go to work in a minute and need to squeeze in time to get my passport....

The world can be a wondrous place, and it's easy to get pulled into distractions and the rat race of it all!

Sometimes you just want to get lost in fantasy and forget the worlds problems.

And sometimes you want to forget distraction and make fantasy reality.

Then I thought back on the advice my writing teacher Dan Lalande told me once. He said if you're having trouble getting started or even finishing something, to just write it.

I actually woke up today lost. I didn't know what day it was for the blog and was really confused as to what I should do!

Protest

I'm not in the mood to write. I'm actually a little bit angry about the state of the world right now. There's a lot of things going on that bother me and I feel mostly powerless to do anything.

It's not just what's going on though, its the people's willingness to accept it without question. How can so many people support such blatant hypocrisy and oppression?

I want to elaborate but this isn't a blog about politics or anything like that. It's a blog about writing. But if you're really interested google whats going on with the protests in Quebec and how they're being dealt with.

Short Sweet Stories

I was thinking about how much I love my home right now. I don't think I want to leave it, really.

I find it fascinating that we can get attached to inanimate things. I'm not sure if its aesthetics or just nostalgic memories but some things we grow really attached too (like an old car, or a deck), and somethings we can throw away without care (like old furniture).

Dreamscape Comic Humpday

Every now and then I'll have a dream where someone I know shows up. Most of the time they look the same as they normally do, but every now and again they don't look anything like they do in real life.

This actually happens to me more often than other people. Sometimes I'm a tall handsome blonde guy, sometimes I'm a lumbering giant who needs a haircut. I even had a dream where I was a Turian! No lie!

I went to the Mayan exhibit at the ROM recently. It was really fascinating. If you haven't seen it yet I suggest seeing it IMMEDIATELY! It leaves the ROM on April 9th. If you don't live on Ontario, well, I hope you haven't missed your chance to see it. I highly recommend it. Especially if you're into ancient civilizations and the such.

The finally has come! Sure took long enough! PHEW!

See, I started this as just some crazy idea then it kind of grew bigger than I initially intended, so I decided to see if I could do it! The blog has been mostly about short stories, poems, and other one-off things (with the exception of Jag Ajula), but I wanted to see if I COULD write a continuing story. The downside was I wrote each new part each day, so I had to deal with all the mistakes I made as I went. If I wanted to have someone mention a name in an earlier part, but they didn't, I had to find clever ways of bringing up the name in the latest installment. It was... stressful sometimes.

I decided to write a murder mystery for you guys! I've always been fond of the genre and would like to write a full murder mystery novel one day, maybe even a series of novels.

I'm sure you all remember Jag Ajula from last month, this isn't the continuation of that (although I will continue it!) this is a separate story. It's really more of an exercise in writing a continued story. This is just Part 1. Part 2 will pick up tomorrow where we left off today.

High School Reunions Suck

I've not gone to any kind of reunion. To me, the idea of spending time with a bunch of people I could barely stand then makes no sense. Why would I go? To brag? That's too smarmy. To hope all those people I didn't like are doing worse than me? That's so petty! I'd rather just chill out with my friends and family and have a drink at home. Maybe catch up on my sleep.

Anyway, today's story is about a high school reunion that takes an unexpected turn.

Music

Now that I've been writing here for almost 2 months I've noticed something.

I can't write if music, or any other distraction, is going on too loudly around me. I tried listening to music to get inspired but I just get lost in the sea of noise and can't focus. It's really frustrating.

Scrapping in

I mentioned yesterday that having to write daily is starting to get my gears to grind slower. Just a bit of rust I assure you. I mostly have a headache right now preventing me from writing mass amounts of prose the gods themselves would be jealous of, so instead have a limerick.

Pressurize

The problem with having a writing blog is part of me wants to just half-ass it. A limerick a day and leave it at that. Maybe free verse a few poems when I get tired of rhyming.

The other problem is I want to be inspiring and write something people will love and be in awe of. I want people to laugh, to cry, to just plain ole smile when they read what I write.

And that's a lot of pressure!

Today was family day. I got to eat a HUGE and delicious meal! Unfortunately I'm really sleepy so I'm not thinking straight right now.

Work Poem

I was at work all day today so I didn't have a chance to do anything at home. I spent my lunch drawing and writing this poem.

Working overtime

I'm working a longer shift tomorrow and you'll probably be hit with a limerick/poem or even a comic tomorrow, so I'm gonna try and write a short for you today to tide you over.

Short Story time!

Hey guys! I'm gonna give you a story to read today. I felt bad for loop holing it yesterday (by the way, I TOTALLY didn't go and play Mass Effect 2, I actually fell asleep after I posted that so...)

I don't mean to keep you guys waiting but I had to skip today, sort of. I loopholed it. If you went to the art blog you already saw it. I was out of the house since I woke up so I didn't have time to do anything. I know it's both late AND a loophole but tomorrow you'll get a short story. I PROMISE!

Cobwebs

My head is so full of cobwebs right now! I'm finding it hard to think today. I may have to cheap out on you guys today. Just a limerick or poem or something really short.

I watched Fight Club for the first time last night and was REALLY inspired.

Unfortunately (as is the case lately) I'm a bit too busy to fully delve into the expressive writing I want to, so instead I'll be leaving you with something shorter, I you enjoy it.

THE WALL!

Everyone calls it "THE WALL" when you have writers block. You have push past "THE WALL." Its a kind of ominous sounding thing.

I don't REALLY have writers block. I just have trouble deciding WHAT to write. I can always just do the Short Story Ideas thing again. I'm pretty decent at writing poetry, I could just do that all day. I have a ton of ideas, but it's a matter of working them out and deciding if they're right for the blog, ya know?

Ok, about a DAY after I started the blogs I found a loophole in my "draw something creative and write something creative"each day. I realized a comic takes artistic work AND written work to make. I was going to exploit that loophole right then and there, but decided against it and to save it for emergencies only!

I have the biggest headache I've ever had right now, so today is gonna be a cope-out day again.

Story 2

This one is a bit sweeter of a story. A lot of what Short Story Ideas has given me are dark and serious themes, this one was a bit more light hearted. I got to play around with character names a lot today and I kind of enjoyed that.

Anyway, that's the end of the 7 days of Short Stories from Short Story Ideas. It was kind of interesting, a little disappointing that 3 took place at an Internet Cafe but I like to think I made it work. Tomorrow I go back to just doing what I feel I can do until I come up with another gimmick.

Ok, I kind of like this one, but this is one of the reasons I didn't want to write the first scenario given to me all the time. Short Story Ideas the website tends to have a VERY finite amount of locations in its database and more often than not I see the same one come up over and over.

Write with errors!

INTRIGUE is the name of the game today! Apparently.
Short Story Ideas gave me a scenario to write about, and, well, I'm going to write it! Even if I don't like it! Here goes!

So much of this is probably inaccurate as all hell, but its supposed to be a good read, not necessarily an accurate one.

Also, I kind of want to open an internet cafe called "Ensemble Dark Horse" now...

So I'm going to be lazy today and just give you another limerick to read. For the next week I'll be writing a short story every day based on what Short Story Ideas the website gives me. First thing it gives me, I write a story about. So, because the next 7 days will be spent with me writing short stories for scenarios that for all purposes might not inspire me at all, I'm taking today off.

And by taking today off, I mean writing a limerick.

Routine

After I finish with the art intensive part I'll be doing a short story week where I'll be writing a short story about the first idea suggested by Short Story Ideas the website. In the meantime, enjoy a story about a person and his routine.

Taking it easy

The next few days will be kind of ART intensive at Dueling Passions, so I'll be taking advantage of that to just throw up a few poems or limericks. Plus it'll give me an opportunity to get inspired to write something else!

1 week

Hey! I've done this for a week now! Woohoo! lets see if I can go for a month!

Genre writing!

I've always been told two things when it comes to writing. Write what you know, and stick to one genre. They say you should find a genre you're good at writing and stick to it. I've always felt like that's bullshit. I think you should exercise your writing muscles by trying to write in different genres. If you like writing in one particular genre, that's great, but don't pigeonholed yourself. It would be like if you listened to only one band. You'd never grow. I've always felt like there's room for anything in genre crossover. You could make someone laugh in a dramatic situation or make someone cry in a comedy if you do it correctly. Anyways...


After the break is a rather emotional story I wrote today. I wasn't sure what I was going to do since I absolutely LOVED the comedic ending of yesterday's story. When I  woke up this morning I just knew today was something serious and emotional. I won't lie, I got a bit emotional myself writing it. I hope you enjoy it!

Inspiration

It's hard to get inspired sometimes, but I keep going! The most important thing is to WRITE! If it's good or not doesn't matter.

Phoning it in

I'm phoning it in today. I had a bigger plan but I slept too late today to get started on it. I think I'll save it for Saturday or Sunday, some day that I have off and can sit in front of my computer for hours on end to write. Enjoy a limerick I wrote about it!

This one was inspired by a semi-true event. I was on my way home last night and saw a man in a window and thought it'd make a great idea for a short.
